Why Solar Estimates Need More Than Your Last Electric Bill

Assemble consumption history, roof information, and future household changes before system sizing.

Your most recent electric bill is useful information for a solar conversation. It is not the whole story. One month may reflect unusual weather, travel, guests, or a household routine that does not represent the rest of the year.

A solar proposal needs a broader view of energy use, the roof, and the changes you reasonably expect. Otherwise, a precise-looking system size can rest on an incomplete description of the home.

Before requesting a final design, gather a small set of records. You are not doing the installer's analysis for them. You are giving that analysis a sound starting point.

Bring a meaningful history of use

Collect a full annual cycle of electricity-use information where available, along with billing periods and any known anomalies. The installer should explain what data they need for the proposed analysis.

Keep energy quantities separate from the dollar total. A bill includes rate structures and charges as well as consumption. Comparing dollars alone can obscure what the house actually used.

Explain changes the bills cannot predict

Are you planning an electric vehicle, a change in heating equipment, a workshop, or a different occupancy pattern? These may affect future use, but they should be represented as assumptions rather than certainties.

Provide what you know and identify what is undecided. A hypothetical future appliance should not quietly become a guaranteed annual consumption figure.

Ask the designer to show how those assumptions influence the proposal. It may be useful to compare the current-use case with a clearly labeled future scenario rather than blending them into one unexplained number.

Bring the roof into the conversation early

Do not assume that a large roof automatically provides the desired solar arrangement. Equipment placement, obstructions, applicable requirements, and the actual site need professional review.

Share known roof work, leaks, warranty information, and planned alterations. If reroofing is likely, coordinate the sequence rather than treating roofing and solar as unrelated purchases.

Identify the questions hidden in a production estimate

Ask what weather data, shading assumptions, orientation, equipment, and system losses inform the estimate. You do not need to reproduce the model, but you should understand what it represents.

A production estimate is not a promise that every month will match the average. Ask how the proposal expresses uncertainty and what monitoring will help assess operation after installation.

Avoid comparing two estimates solely by which one predicts more energy. First compare the underlying system and assumptions. A more optimistic model is not automatically a better design.

Keep utility rules current and local

Grid connection, billing, export credits, and program eligibility depend on the applicable utility and current rules. Verify them for the property before relying on a financial projection.

Do not assume a neighbor's arrangement or an older article applies unchanged. Ask the installer to identify the tariff and interconnection assumptions used, and confirm relevant details with the utility or appropriate authority.

Keep incentive and tax questions separate from general system suitability. Time-sensitive financial or legal details should be reviewed by the appropriate qualified adviser. An evergreen planning article cannot establish future eligibility.

Discuss how the household uses energy during the day

The timing of use may matter to the way production interacts with the home and grid. Ask whether the proposal considers only annual totals or also the pattern relevant to your utility arrangement and system design.

Do not change household routines solely to make an estimate look favorable. Describe what is realistic. A work-from-home household, an empty house during the day, and a home with scheduled equipment use may have different patterns.

If storage or backup is part of the conversation, have it analyzed explicitly. A battery changes the energy-flow and outage questions; it should not be treated as a decorative add-on to an otherwise complete estimate.

Ask what happens after installation

A useful proposal should describe monitoring access, support, warranties, documentation, and the handoff. Know who owns the accounts and how you will recognize and report a concern.

Ask what production and consumption information the installed monitoring can actually measure. Some values may depend on additional metering or configuration. The screen should not promise data the installation is not equipped to provide.

Keep the design assumptions with the final records. They give future comparisons context and help distinguish a changed household from a changed system.

Assemble one compact preparation folder

Include utility history, roof information, planned household changes, photographs available from safe locations, and your goals. State whether the main interest is bill reduction, resilience, a future energy plan, or some combination.
