Run the Wires While the Walls Are Open

Coordinate cable routes and future access during remodeling without prescribing code-sensitive installation methods.

Open walls are a temporary opportunity. Once insulation, drywall, paint, and trim are complete, adding a cable route may involve much more disruption than discussing it while the area is already accessible.

That does not mean filling every cavity with every cable you can imagine. It means pausing before close-in to ask what the household will reasonably need and how future access can be preserved.

A modest, coordinated wiring plan can support work, entertainment, wireless coverage, and selected smart-home uses without turning the remodel into a technology project that never ends.

Start with destinations, not cable quantities

List the places where a wired connection or planned low-voltage route would be useful. A desk, television area, ceiling access point, doorbell location, or equipment shelf each has a different purpose.

Describe what happens there and what is likely to change. A room called a bedroom may later become an office, but you do not need to predict every device that will exist in ten years.

The useful question is where a sensible connection or accessible pathway would prevent avoidable future disruption. Let that guide the scope instead of buying cable by the largest spool available.

Coordinate before the wall is ready to close

Bring the wiring discussion into the project schedule. Framing, electrical, plumbing, insulation, and finish work may all interact with the proposed routes.

Ask who is responsible for the low-voltage work, what approvals or inspections apply, and when testing will happen. Do not assume one trade will notice and accommodate another trade's undocumented plan.

Changes are easier to coordinate when they are drawn and agreed rather than mentioned casually while materials are arriving. Even a simple destination schedule can prevent missed locations.

Respect the building, not just the signal

Cable type, supports, penetrations, separation from other services, firestopping, and environmental suitability need to follow the applicable requirements. A route that is electrically convenient may still be wrong for the building.

Do not drill structural members, share conduits, or route cable through a return-air or other special space based on guesswork. Have the appropriate professionals determine the installation method.

The goal is a maintainable system that belongs in the house. A successful speed test does not excuse an unsuitable physical installation.

Plan wireless locations as wired destinations

Where separate access points are part of the network plan, their locations deserve the same attention as wall outlets for desks or televisions. They need an appropriate connection and, depending on the system, a power arrangement.

Place them based on coverage needs and the actual building, not only on where a cable can be hidden. A neat equipment location in the basement does not automatically provide useful wireless coverage upstairs.

The mesh-versus-wired discussion can help frame the decision. The point is to decide the topology while practical routes are available, rather than buying devices later to compensate for avoidable placement limits.

Leave future access that can actually be used

An accessible pathway may be more adaptable than installing speculative cables for products you have not selected. Ask the installer what pathway approach suits the building and intended use.

Document its endpoints, route, and limitations. A hidden empty conduit with no known destination is not much of a gift to future you. Neither is a pathway that becomes inaccessible behind permanent cabinetry.

Keep the plan realistic. Future access is useful when it has a clear route and purpose, not when it is described vaguely as "we can probably fish something later."

Label before the walls hide the story

Use a consistent naming system at both ends of each installed run. Match the labels to a simple plan and the final testing record.

Take photographs with enough context to identify the wall and fixed landmarks. Avoid relying on a close-up of several identical cables. Include the finished outlet location in the record once the work is complete.

Store the documentation with the house records, not only on the installer's phone. Keep passwords and other sensitive access information separate from the general route and equipment map.

Test the intended installation, not just continuity

Ask what testing is included for the selected cable system and use. The test should be appropriate to the installation rather than an informal statement that a device lit up once.

Record results and identify any limitations before finishes make correction harder. Also confirm that the physical outlets, labels, and equipment destinations match the plan.

At handoff, connect representative devices in the agreed locations. This practical check complements the installation testing and helps reveal a mislabeled or overlooked destination.

Keep the project proportionate

You do not need a commercial rack or dozens of unused ports to benefit from planning. A few well-placed runs and good documentation may solve the most important household needs.
